Curriculum Milestones

Kingmoor Junior School’s curriculum is underpinned by the Essentials Curriculum by Chris Quigley for our foundation subjects. Working in tandem with Kingmoor Nursery and Infant school we have developed our curriculum to deliver the best possible learning journey for our pupils. The Essentials Curriculum sets out the essential coverage, learning objectives and standards which are required for all subject areas in line with the national curriculum. Furthermore, it provides rigorous progress measures for all subjects while focusing on social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of the child.

Our developed curriculum allows pupils to develop skills which are not contextually bound. Pupils are able to explore skills in other subject areas which will develop their breadth and depth of understanding. Much cognitive development research outlines the process to which our curriculum adheres to. Our subject areas allow for the interleaving of key knowledge and skills to maximise progression across the key stage with our intention of sustained mastery of skills and a greater depth understanding.

Careful sequencing of ‘milestones’ from the foundation stage and up through key stage one and into key stage two provides a coherent, structured, and academic curriculum. The milestones (1, 2 and 3) are aligned to the National Curriculum and go beyond National Curriculum requirements in each milestone to ensure repetition of skills and knowledge.

Threshold concepts run right through the curriculum and are broken down into the three milestones. Within these milestones are ‘learning indicators’ which are then broken down into ‘Basic, Advanced and Deep to’ show how children's depth of understanding of the Threshold Concepts develops. This also allows for pupils to be supported and work at the level they can access the learning or be developed further to a deeper understanding.

As we continue to develop and make more links through our curriculum, we will return to our milestones document to ensure that every pupil receives the best possible learning journey through our school.
